Honors English 9 Course Syllabus - Pickens High School - 2016-2017

Welcome to the 2016-2017 academic year at Pickens High School. Honors English 9 is a course designed to meet the needs of advanced and gifted students, providing them a basis for continued acceleration and a pathway to college preparedness in successive English courses.
As such, expectations are high, and students should enter the class with a positive mindset and a strong work ethic.
The cornerstone of the course will be literary response through the written word.. Students will read literary works from various genres and will respond using argumentative, informational, analytical, and comparison and contrast compositions.
Compositions will adhere to clearly defined standards of organization, thesis development, logic, idea development, structure, sentence formation, and mastery of correctly written grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. These compositions will include short response and essays and will correctly reference literary selections and authors as well as incorporate textual evidence from assigned readings.
In addition, students will participate in weekly grammar and vocabulary acquisition, group discussion and group projects, and public speaking.
Assignment grading weights are 40% for formative assessments and 60% for summative assessments. Students may make up missed work in accordance with Pickens High School and Pickens County school system policies.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. A first offense will result in refusal of the assignment, official documentation of the offense, and an opportunity to make up the assignment for a maximum of 70 points. Successive infractions will result in a failing grade and an administrative referral.
Materials for class: Several spiral-bound composition books, blue or black ink pens, pencils, several pocket folders, highlighters, dictionary, thesaurus (or electronic device with Internet capability).

World Lit 10 - Pickens High School - 2016-2017

Welcome to the 2016-2017 academic year at Pickens High School. World Literature 10 is a genre-organized literary study designed to expose students to various authors and their works while providing skills for coherent written response.
Students will read various short stories, novels, plays, and poetry and respond by utilizing argumentative, informational, analytical, and comparison and contrast writing. Additionally, students will participate in weekly vocabulary and grammar acquisition, group discussion and projects, and public speaking.

Welcome to journalism instruction at Pickens High School. This course is designed to engage students primarily in production of the PHS Draca yearbook but also offers opportunities in conjunction with school newsletters, the Pickens County Progress, and other local media.
Assignments in the class include editorial management, art and graphic design, photography, copywriting and editing, public relations, and business facilitation.
As a student in this class and as a staff member for the PHS Draca yearbook, you will be expected to adhere to exemplary work ethic and exemplary journalistic integrity. PHS Draca yearbook, PHS newsletters, and PHS journalistic endeavors affiliated with the Pickens County Progress and other local agencies are representations of Pickens High School and of community standards. As such, it is of the utmost importance that student staff members uphold those standards of decency and good taste and realize that the liberties of freedom of the press and freedom of speech are not afforded without the responsibility of moral and ethical discernment and obligation. As such, students will be expected to abide by expectations listed below in association with yearbook production and other class assignments.
A first offense of any type will result in a probationary period during which a student is assigned non-production duties (this will affect the student’s final grade). A second offense will result in permanent assignment to non-production duties (this will affect the student’s final grade) or dismissal from staff.
In accordance with the aforementioned standards, each journalism student and his or her parent/ legal guardian will sign below, stating that the expectations set forth and the potential consequences of infractions are understood and that said student agrees to abide by the ethics outlined in this contract. Failure to return this signed contract will result in the student being placed in a non-production capacity within the classroom and will affect the student’s final grade.

- Students must complete assigned tasks before or by deadlines.
- Students must work cooperatively with the yearbook advisor and fellow staff members.
- Students must remain on task during class time.
- Students may not utilize journalism software, websites, and equipment for their personal agendas or work.
- Students may not plagiarize materials.
- Students may not, in any way, harass or defame others.
- Students may not engage in production of images or written materials objectionable in nature.
- Students may not share yearbook images, script, articles, etc. with anyone outside the journalism class and may not post on social media.
- Students are responsible for technological equipment and photography equipment.
- Students are responsible for refraining from slander and libel.
- Students are accountable to the yearbook advisor and to the PHS faculty and administration.
- The yearbook advisor retains final editorial control over all materials, and student-generated artwork, copy, graphic design, photography, etc. are subject to editing or omission if deemed controversial or objectionable.
